Achieving Gender Equity in Industry Sponsored Advisory Boards: Translating a Vision for DE&I Into Reality

Incorporating diverse perspectives results in better outcomes. Companies across the healthcare ecosystem frequently rely on advisory boards to seek input from outside “opinion leaders”,or experts, to inform planning and execution. While companies’ diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) efforts often include gender representation internally, little focus has been placed on gender representation in external forums, such as advisory boards. Ensuring a diverse set of perspectives is represented in advisory boards requires both leadership commitment and practical execution. Today, Medical Affairs professionals play an instrumental role in advisory boards from conceptualization to execution to disseminating insights across their companies. There is an untapped opportunity for Medical Affairs professionals to positively impact advisory boards and shape their companies’ approach to engaging with external stakeholders. This session will define the observed gaps in gender equity in industry sponsored advisory boards, linking to the broader disparity dialogue in healthcare today. Representation from academic medical leaders, biopharma and diagnostic companies, as well as medical affairs professionals, will be incorporated into a dynamic experiential session. Examples of how several companies have created systematic ways to increase gender representation in advisory boards will be shared. Practical tips will be outlined to help MA professionals translate their vision into reality.
